Over the last several years, a lot of young players have emerged on the UK professional poker arena. They are considered part of the so-called new generation of poker players, so here is a list with the top three British poker players who have begun their careers in the last few years.
1. Sam “Tricky” Trickett
Born in East Retford in 1986, Sam Trickett is currently arguably considered the most famous professional poker player in the UK, and is also undoubtedly the youngest one. The became internationally famous after finishing second in the Big One for One Drop, losing to Antonio Esfandiari in 2012. Still, Trickett got a prize of more than $10 million and has managed to become the tournament’s fifth highest-earning player of all time.
The 30-year-old Trickett is part of the new generation of poker players – the one after 2003, when poker was “revolutionized” by Chris Moneymaker after him qualifying for the World Series of Poker via an online satellite and winning the tournament afterwards.
Sam Trickett started playing poker professionally in 2005. Up to date, he is best known for winning the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour Luton Main Event in 2008 and taking part of the 41st edition of the World Series of Poker, winning several cash prizes. He also earned about £1 million by playing in a number of high stakes table games in Macau, and another €1 million over the Partouche Poker Tour Main Event that took place in Cannes in 2011. Apart from finishing second in the Big One for One Drop, he also took part in the 2013 Aussie Millions, winning $2.1 million.
2. Jake “Neverbluff67” Cody
Along Sam Trickett, Jake Cody is another example of the new generation of poker players. Born in 1988 in Rochdale, the youngster is relatively new to the professional poker arena. However, Cody has managed to make a massive impact on the UK poker world quite fast and is widely popular for being one of the players whose success proved that the UK web-based poker sector has been flourishing lately.
In 2010, Cody become quite famous after generating large winnings at the European Poker Tour in Deauville and then taking part in the World Poker Tour in London the same year, where he managed to win £273,783. The total live winnings of the player are estimated to over $4 million.
The player is also known for winning a World Series of Poker bracelet after winning its $25k Heads Up No Limit Hold’em event five years ago and also earning a final table appearance in the Main Event of 2011 WSOPE.
3. Liv Boeree
The 31-year-old Liv Boeree can be undoubtedly ranked among the three top UK professional poker players. She began her professional career after being chosen to take part in a reality TV poker show in 2005 and is known for being coached back there by the retired UK iconic player Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott.
After that she became more oriented to live poker tables, as well as to reporting work. Boeree is probably among the most successful female poker players. She is best known for winning the Ladbrokes European Ladies Championship in 2008, as well as for winning more than €1.20 million at the Main Event of the European Poker Tour in Sanremo in 2010, when she became the third ever female who managed to win a European Poker Tour title.
